Secret Santa in September
New York, NY. August 23, 2000 . . . "I think we're now the heaviest company
in town," laughs Suzanne Swift, president of SpecSimple.com and InfoEdge. Last year her
companies collected over 1,000 pounds of finish samples and literature from 25 architectural
and design firms in New York and New Jersey. Participating firms include The Phillips Group,
Gensler, and HLW International. The materials were distributed to Parsons, Pratt Institute,
the Fashion Institute of Technology, the School of Visual Arts, and the New York Institute of
Technology.
As a result of this drive‚ the first of its kind in the nation‚ talented students throughout
the city had a much richer set of resources to turn to throughout the year. The drive was so
successful Swift has decided to do it again! This time there's a new twist: a sponsorship
program. "It's a bit like Secret Santa," says Swift. "Manufacturers and their representatives
sign up to sponsor the materials collected from the design firm of their choice. After volunteer
dealers collect the boxes; the firm receives a certificate revealing their sponsor's identity. The
money raised is divided equally among participating schools and will be awarded during Design
Days (October 4th through 6th). All funds are earmarked to hire design students to maintain
their schools' libraries." Interested manufacturers and their representatives should visit the
SpecSimple.com website to sign up.
This year's drive will be held September 25th through September 27th.
