$10,000 to be raised for NY area design schools
New York, NY. August 29, 2001 . . . . "It was sort of like Secret Santa," says Suzanne Swift, President of SpecSimple.com and Info Edge, Inc... "And it was a real success. Manufacturers and their representatives signed up in droves to sponsor boxes of materials donated by the design firm of their choice. After local furniture dealers collected the boxes, participating firms received a certificate revealing their sponsor's identity. Awarded to the schools at special ceremony, the funds raised were earmarked to provide design students with part time jobs maintaining their schools' libraries.
"Now that we've got the hang of it," says Swift, "we're upping the ante. Last year we raised several thousand dollars while collecting over 2,000 pounds of finish samples and literature. This year our goal is $10,000."
Swift went on to explain that raising money is just the icing on the cake. The major thrust of the drive -- which is the only one of its kind in the nation -- remains samples and literature. "Today's design students are better prepared to be tomorrow's business leaders because of the support of Info Edge, Inc. and SpecSimple.com," says Lovejoy Duryea, Chairman of the Interior Design Department at the School of Visual Arts. Ms. Duryea also praises the firms' pioneering efforts, whose "scholarship sets a trend and raises the bar for the industry."
"1,000 lbs. the first year, 2,000 lbs. the second: "We're going for 2 tons and I'm inviting the entire industry to help us out!"
